When I first started configuring the remote, I saw the awful desktop software that hadn’t really improved since the 520 I had before.

Prior to my new TV and media center, my TiVo remote controlled the TV and TiVo, so I wasn’t used to multiple remotes. With my new media center and TV, I now have 4 remotes to deal with everything, so life is much more complicated. I had a Harmony 520 remote before and wasn’t all that impressed with it, but it has been a few years, so I decided to give it another try. The other day I went to Costco to pick something up and walked out with a Logitech Harmony 880 remote.

So, I’ll get an amplifier and give that a try. Luckily, the cable connection to all my equipment is basically a straight connection from the outside with one splitter that was installed by the cable company. This, however, may have been because of the particular amplifier and wiring in my house (I have RG59 in most of my house and an old amplifier in the garage). I’ve been hesitant to get an amplifier and place it between the incoming cable and my cable modem (my cable modem is at the same place as my TV and EyeTV I have to split the line to handle all the devices) as a cable guy several years ago warned me that my Internet connection could be degraded by an amplifier. I’m hopeful that I can solve my EyeTV problems pretty soon with a signal amplifier. We started watching a show and the quality difference is quite amazing. This has given me the luxury of watching shows in HD and I just realized that I’m now spoiled.Īfter a bit of fighting with the EyeTV where the signal strength and signal quality aren’t great and missing shows, I had to revert back to the TiVo to watch some shows. If you know your HD content is natively 30 fps, you’ll need to opt down for the 950*540 resolution.I’ve been using the EyeTV for recording and watching most of my TV in the last few weeks. If you check that, HandBrake will be on the look out for the tell-tale signs that something that is technically 30 frames per second (as most TV broadcasts are) is really 24 frames per second. Under picture settings there is a box that says “VFR”.

Most movie content is natively 24 fps, and using HandBrake you can ask it to convert it for you. Since I’m mainly recording movies I have figured out this work around. For working with HD material you’ve got a choice to make – either make it 1280*720p 24 fps or 960*540p 30 fps.

If I’m working with SD content I start with the Apple TV preset, and make sure I turn deinterlacing on (under picture settings). For my purposes I’m exporting to Apple TV. Here you have a wealth of options depending on what you want to do with the file. You don’t HAVE to take this extra step as HandBrake can handle the EyeTV files directly, but it’s a good idea as a precaution.

In the process it will also fix any breaks in the stream that would otherwise cause HandBrake to goof up the conversion.

You’ll have to go to “Open Files” and select “All Files” under view.

I own an EyeTV 250 Plus TV Tuner from Elgato that I use to record material (mainly movies) off of TV.
